Branford's history dates back to 1638 when the New Haven Colony purchased land known as Totokett from the Mattabesec Indians. It was permanently settled in 1644 as Totokett and was later renamed Branford. Connecticut's first Iron Furnace was set up in 1655 at Lake Saltonstall in Branford. Yale college was founded in Branford in 1701. Branford also has a classic New England Town Green in the center of town where you will find small shops, Town Hall, the library, and many of the town's houses of worship. Branford probably has the largest collection of diverse neighborhoods and sections of town than any other shoreline community, which also makes Branford one of the most interesting communities as well. Neighborhoods and sections of town proudly retain their individual identity whether Indian Neck, Double Beach, Haycock Point, Hotchkiss Grove, Pine Orchard, or Stony Creek.
